England international has surpassed expectations across an outstanding individual season at Roma and the Giallorossi have been so impressed that they have been exploring a permanent deal for the centre-back this summer.
Chris was able to see out the remainder of the Serie A season but the impact of the covid crisis on football’s scheduling means his loan deal expired before Giallorossi Europa League round of 16 games with Sevilla.
Attempts to extend the loan have been unsuccessful which has come as a huge blow to both Roma and Chris. ‘I’m gutted that I can’t finish what we started this season,’ Smalling said in a message on Instagram. ‘I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla. DAJE ROMA!’

Serie A giants are reportedly struggling to meet Red Devils £25m asking price to sign Chris permanently and are drawing up a list of alternatives should they fail to reach a deal.
Jan Vertonghen is firmly on Giallorossi’s radar after his deal came to an end at London club. Last month, Giallorossi sporting director Gianluca Pertrachi stressed that the club were doing ‘everything possible’ to keep Chris beyond the summer.
The Norwegian manager will keep hold of Chris this summer if Man United are unable to bring in another defender ahead of the 2020/21 season. However, the Norwegian boss has serious concerns about Chris’ ability in possession and would prefer to look elsewhere to bolster his current options.
