The Red Devils had also been linked with Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico during the summer. But Red Devils Plan B, if they failed to sign Alex Telles, was to land Italy international from Chelsea. It is claimed that Red Devils did not make an official approach to Blues but the club did hold initial negotiations with Palmieri’s representatives.
Blues, who now have three left-backs in their squad following the £50m signing of Ben Chilwell in August, were open to letting Emerson leave and join a club in Serie A on loan. However, the Blues were unwilling to bolster a rival and would not approve a loan deal which would have seen the 26-year-old defender join Man United.
Red Devils were ‘convinced’ by the Italian defender but were put off by Blues possible demands to sign Alex Telles on a permanent deal. Palmieri joined Chelsea for £18m from Roma in January 2018 but has been unable to establish a regular role since moving to London club.
Reports claimed this summer that Blues were holding out for a £26m fee for Emerson. Meanwhile, Alex Telles has been handed the No.27 shirt following his move to Man United. ‘He is a player we have been tracking for some time and his performances over the past few years are exactly what we are looking for,’ said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
