UPDATE-Chelsea Given Green Light To Sign €60m-Rated Uruguay International
Jose Maria Gimenez is a part of a three-man shortlist that has been drawn up at the London giants to strengthen the heart of their back-line in the summer transfer window. The Atletico Madrid centre-back also has Niklas Sule and Ibrahima Konate for the company on this list.
Uruguay international joined La Liga giants from Danubio in the summer of 2013 and has since made huge progress in his career. However, Jose Maria has never really been able to nail down his spot in the side over the last eight years, although this campaign, he has been hampered by several injuries.
As a result, so far in 2020/21, Gimenez has managed to appear in only over half of the 37 matches that the Los Rojiblancos have played this season, though he has only missed two games when fit and available. However, the 26-year-old centre-back, which is why it is not surprising to see the links with Chelsea appear again.
Blues appear set to enter the transfer market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window, despite signing Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr only last year. Having said that, the keenness to sign a centre-back is not unfounded, seeing as Silva is in the twilight of his career, while Fikayo Tomori could well join Milan permanently in the summer.
In addition, Antonio Rudiger faces an uncertain future at the London club as well, with his current contract having a little over a year left to run out, while he has also been linked with Juventus.
That is why, Blues are having to keep their options open ahead of the summer transfer window, with the Uruguayan defender part of a three-man shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window.
